WCAG 2.2 AA starter checklist for small websites

WCAG 2.2 Level AA is a common technical target for public SME websites preparing for accessibility expectations (including EAA‑minded readiness). The full W3C document is free — what most teams need is a scoped starter list they can finish. This article is educational. It is not legal advice and does not certify your site.

How to use this starter list

  1. Pick your homepage, one product/service page, and your contact or checkout form.
  2. Work top to bottom. Mark “pass / fail / N/A” honestly.
  3. Fix the fails you can; schedule developer help for the rest.
  4. Date your notes — useful when you draft an accessibility statement.

Core WCAG 2.2 AA checks (SME-friendly)

  • 1. Perceivable: Text alternatives for images; captions/transcripts for meaningful AV; adaptable structure (headings, lists); sufficient contrast; text resizable without loss of content.
  • 2. Operable: Full keyboard access; no keyboard traps; enough time where timers exist; no seizure-inducing flashes; clear focus order and visible focus; skip links; link purpose from context.
  • 3. Understandable: Page language set; consistent navigation; clear labels and error messages; help users avoid and correct mistakes.
  • 4. Robust: Valid-enough markup so assistive tech can parse name, role, and value — prefer native controls over custom widgets.

WCAG 2.2 additions worth noticing

WCAG 2.2 adds criteria many SME themes still miss: focus not obscured, dragging alternatives, target size, consistent help, accessible authentication patterns, and redundant entry. If your theme or plugin is old, spot-check these on forms and menus.

Keep expectations honest

A starter checklist is a map, not a verdict. Automated scanners catch some issues and miss others. Overlays do not replace fixing HTML, CSS, and content. For legal questions about the EAA or other laws, consult a qualified attorney.
